Tackle the Overtime Issue
According to the Department of Labor, the new rule of overtime includes employers new FLSA overtime exemption salary being set at $47,476. As a result, many company’s will need to look at whether or not it is financially better to raise an employee’s salary or to change them to a non-exempt employee. Either way, the decision is not an easy one for many businesses.
Reduce Overtime
With the new overtime rule now in play, it may be a good time to review your company’s business model in order to see whether or not overtime can be reduced within the workplace.
First, consider your schedule for employees. How long has this schedule been in place? Has it been a year, five years, since the beginning? It may be time for a change. Is there a way to make the schedule to where the work is covered by associates, but maybe on different schedules? You want to make sure the schedule works so that productivity remains high while absenteeism decreases.
You also want to make sure the amount of workers on each shift meets the demands for that time frame. Do you have more workers scheduled in the morning, but have more demand at night? Then, you need to consider working fewer employees during the “down time” and more employees during the busier hours.
Cross-training can also help with overtime, because you are able to have more than a couple of skilled workers for one job placement. Therefore, if an issue arises, and two of the three regulars are out for the day, you have someone else who can help take over instead of the third worker who may have already hit their 40-hour mark.
