Highway to the “Safety” Zone

According to the United States Department of Labor, the number of deaths among workers is down by more than 66 percent from 1970. However, one in five deaths in 2014 was within the construction industry, so important steps still need to be taken to ensure the number only continues to decrease in the workplace.

Get Your Helmets On

“EHS Today” states that there is a “fatal four” when it comes to injuries in construction.

They are:

  • Falls
  • Getting caught between objects
  • Electrocutions
  • Being struck by objects

Safety is an important part of any job held within the construction industry, and it starts from the top. Management needs to work hard to ensure employees participate in safety meetings and trainings, enabling them to be fully equipped to safely handle any situation that comes their way. There also needs to be an accountability factor. Every employee should be held responsible for making sure safety is of the utmost importance in every move they make on their job site—not only for their protection, but also for the protection of their colleagues.

Communication is also a key component in regards to safety within the construction industry. Safety should always be a point of discussion on any project—every day. This will help keep it in the forefront of everyone’s minds when performing their duties.
